Throwback Thursday: Dancing Machine / by Donna Olivia Owusu-Ansah

She’s a dance, dance, dance, dance, dancin’ machine
Watch her get down, watch her get down.
— The Jackson Five
You have to dance unencumbered. There’s no other way to move. The idea of dance is freedom. It is not exclusiveness, it’s inclusiveness.

My Big Girl has dance on Mondays. She’s currently taking ballet and jazz. Jazz is her jam, which makes sense because she’s always been a sassy girl. I mean, what six year old do you that requests the Heavy D station on Pandora to get her pumped up for school? I digress. This past week as she waited for her dance class to begin, I studied her:

She is poised.

She is beautiful.

She is growing up.

I had a moment, like a scene from This is Us where I flashed back to her first day at dance four and a half years ago and the day her tights were ripped to shreds but she danced anyway. I thought about so many moments from arabesque and tandus on stage to watching her whip as we freestyle at home. Wherever she dances and whatever the style, I love to witness how FREE she is when the beat drops. So, on this Throwback Thursday, I look back on Big Girl’s four year dance career. Won’t you look back with me…
