On Thursday, April 18, 2019 I had the good pleasure of presenting for the Goals of Care Coalition of NJ at their Inaugural Summit. The theme was Discuss, Decide, Document: An Interprofessional Summit on Advanced Care Planning. It was a well attended event with hospital administrators, physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains and advanced care planning advocates. I was super nervous. More nervous than I’d ever been preaching or speaking. It could have been that speaking on this topic was new to me (though I’ve written about it here). It could have been the audience; If you think physicians are intimidating when you’re at an examination, imagine 60 plus physicians staring at you to hear what you have to say. Just before she got up to introduce me, my mentor Rev. Dr. Annari Griesel took my hand and gave it a good squeeze. It was an assurance that all would be well. Despite my nerves, God stood me up and I offered my words on the subject Compassionate Consent: How Culture, Spirituality and Religion Inform Medical Decision Making. If you have twenty minutes, I invite you to watch it below.
